How Computers Became Home Computers

SvOlli
Saturday, 2024-03-30 10:00 CET

It’s about the years 1974-1977, how individual parts and kits eventually became complete home computers.

I start with the Altair 8800 and end with the “1977 Trinity” consisting of Commodore PET, Apple 2 and TRS-80.
One focus for me was: “How do I tell the computer what I want from it?”, i.e. the user interface.

Demoparty in a box - How to set up a complete demoparty in 2024 with just a few boxes of equipment which is easy to transport and to set up.

FRaNKy/RBBS
Saturday, 2024-03-30 13:00 CET

This seminar will not tell you how to run a demoparty, sorry about that.
We will show you however a method on how to run your beam- and compo-system as optimal and at the highest quality possibl with an optional streaming component added should you want to do this.
As a bonus we will also walk thru the setup of doing an online only demoparty with distributed organizing and commentary to increase all this beautiful complexity.

FRaNKy has been organizing demoparties since 1997 on a multitude of platforms. Outside of the (in)famous Belgian Beer Seminar, FRaNKy also hosts various streams and commentaries for Scenesat and X-Party, organizes demoparties such as RSync in Belgium and runs all the technicalities and streaming headquarters of ChipsnBricks Twitch retro computing demoshows and Transmission64, the online C64 demoparty.

Farbrausch in London - Groundbreaking LED installation using Ventuz

Chaos/farbrausch and Dennis Dworak, Ventuz Technology AG
Saturday, 2024-03-30 14:00 CET

Outernet London is a landmark building made of LED walls inside and out, arguably the most complex installation of its kind, with multiple venues in the same building, each of them unique.

See how Chaos, KB and BoyC working at Ventuz created the software that drives all these panels. Get a view behind the scenes of professional graphics installations. This talk will cover the logistics of delivering graphics with 17 Computers and 51 GPUs, the artistic challenges of doing graphics inside a cube and the technical solutions required.

Ventuz looks like your typical demo tool with its node based user interface, but there’s a lot more going on behind these nodes.

Direction in Scene Productions - An Introduction

psykon
Saturday, 2024-03-30 15:00 CET

What is “Direction” and how can its principles be applied to demoscene productions?
What does it mean for a demo to have “good direction”?
Does a demo even need some form of direction, when it focuses solely on presenting outstanding effects?

This seminar is meant to answer questions just as those. We’ll take a look at the theory and principles - the “why” and “how” of direction - through examples from the demoscene and discuss how to apply those in the process of designing and building a demo.
Regardless of platform or size restrictions.

This is why I haven't played your track in my sets - An orientation on what makes a track attractive to play for a DJ

lug00ber
Saturday, 2024-03-30 16:00 CET

In spite of DJs being all over the schedule at demoparties, they often opt to play regular commercially released music over tracks from compos - be it demo soundtracks or just regular compo tracks.
Playing music for a dance floor and mixing it with other music in a continuous stream of danceable beats puts some requirements on the tracks.
In this seminar lug00ber will go through the basics, show some examples and give you tips on how to structure music to make it usable for DJs - making it easy for you to do a club mix of your latest demo soundtrack hit (because you should!).

Audience: This seminar targets musicians, but should also be interesting if you just want to understand what’s going on during a set from the DJ’s perspective - or if you are a DJ that wants to spend 45 minutes raising your hand and saying “well, actually” from the back!

My Favorite Deepfake – Content Authenticity in the Age of Zero Trust

kudrix
Sunday, 2024-03-31 10:00 CEST

Crystal-clear for Demosceners: Original content rules.
It’s attributed to its creators. They properly quote if applicable. Credit goes to all involved. Toolchains are disclosed, mostly.
Practical reality in our hyperconnected world tells differently: It’s full of forged content, often it’s artificially created deepfakes. Fact is hard to distinguish from fiction, true origins and creator attribution are often unclear.

Dive in and discuss: How can we regain trust when nothing is to be trusted anymore?

The Apple II and the scene - a late bloomer

Fenarinarsa/French Touch
Sunday, 2024-03-31 11:00 CEST

Despite being a best seller in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Apple II had been overlooked by the scene for dozens of years before going through a rediscovery in the mid 2010s.
So maybe it’s time we review what you can expect from it, its sound & graphic capabilities, the main challenges they pose, and the few tricks you can use to make demos using modern tools.

We will check some released prods as well and see what is special about some of them.

If you never used an Apple II before or if you are curious to learn more about what’s inside or how it compares to its fellow 8-bit computers, now is your chance!
