Live-Coding at Revision 2024

Shader Showdowns are a high-energy, graphically impressive visual livecoding event.

Since its inception at WeCan in 2013, the Shader Showdown format has grown in popularity amongst different demoparties across the world and has been a regular event at Revision ever since. https://livecode.demozoo.org/serie/Revision.html#mc

During the years of the pandemic the format of the event grew to less competitive jam-like formats also opening to remote networked participation.

At this Revision, we will have 3 live coding events open for participation:

  • 3-way Shader Showdown (live presence)
  • TIC80 jam session (live presence)
  • Shader Royale VJ session (remote participation)

3-WAY SHADER SHOWDOWN

Programmers face each other off, live on stage, coding GLSL shader effects from scratch with no outside assistance besides the DJ pumping some beats. The crowd gets to watch the code evolve on the big screen, enjoying the action and cheering on the participants.

The objective is simple: At the end of the 25 minutes, whoever gets more votes wins and goes through to the final. The winner of the final gets crown Revision shader showdown champion.

We will have a bracket elimination tournament with rounds of 3 contestants per round.

Usual Shader Showdown rules apply:

  • Every battle lasts 25 minutes, and you have to write all code from scratch.
  • Battle timer will be paused for all contestants if there is some technical issue with one of the machines.
  • All code has to be written in GLSL using the latest version of BONZOMATIC (the novelty for this year is contestants being allowed to use a newer version that supports texture read/write, a simplified compute shader).
  • A set of textures will be provided for each round (including the Revision logo).
  • Competitors are welcome to bring their own keyboard (without memory function), we will have different languages support installed.

The semi-finals will take place on Friday, the final on Saturday. Commentators will be discussing and explaining the code during the sessions. Audience will be able to livevote.

TIC80 JAM SESSION

On Saturday we will host a 1 hour livecode jam session on the main stage where participants can use the TIC80 fantasy console programming environment (special fork version with an FFT function to respond to sound).

The session is open to anyone onsite who can code LUA, you can bring a friend to help you and even swap out with someone else from the audience if you are out of ideas. Low pressure livecoding just for fun.

Contact aldroid or RacoonViolet if you want to participate.

SHADER ROYALE VJ SESSION

On Saturday, between compo blocks, h0ffman and teo will play a flaming hot amiga music set to keep the masses entertained.

As visuals for this we will host a massive shader royale jam session, open to anyone in the world with a network connection and a copy of networked BONZOMATIC to participate remotely. Expect dozens of participants live-coding their shaders and some pre-prepared surprises. Participants can also leave at any moment, and we will keep showing the latest version of their shader. The creations will be shown on rotation at the big screen throughout the DJ set, effectively working as a VJ system to the session.

If you want to participate on this session please contact totetmatt or psenough on discord.

Revision 5k Run

The traditional SPORT(ish) event you all love will finally happen on site again: The exhausting and fun 5k Run!

Come with us for a refreshing morning boost, touring the Saar river as you go! Did anything change along the way? Is the beer&schnapps break still there? Only one way to find out! RSVP to the Onsite Club Event

And don’t worry: if you’re stuck at home, or participating at one of the Satellites, we still got you covered! All you need to do is put on your running gear, RSVP to the Offsite Club Event, and sign up for the Strava March 5K run challenge. Also, feel free to upload pictures from your run on social media with the #revision5krun tag, and don’t forget that beer&schnapps break halfway!

The run starts on Saturday morning, March 30th at 11:00 CET.

Look behind the scenes

If you’d like to take a look behind the scenes to find out where all the orga magic happens, there will be Q&A tours of various orga areas held by the responsible organizers.
Prior sign-up for these is not necessary - the times they will take place can be found in the timetable and the start of each tour will also be announced at the party place individually.
Meetup point for each tour will be the infodesk. Watch out for a person holding an orange flag! (Only exception is the “Seminars, Recording, Postprocessing” tour - go to the seminar room directly!)

Information: for the Beamteam tour, two slots are offered, as the space at their working area is quite limited. So, if you can’t catch a spot one the first tour, there’s a second chance.

Morning Glory with dojoe & D.Fox

Do you miss the good old days of Revision Online where dojoe and D.Fox woke you up with some recaps, music and general banter and maybe some guests?

No? Well tough luck, because they are BACK, and they have some stories to tell while we all get our first dose of caffeine (or whatever you need to get up in the morning). It’ll be a nice way to wake up, we promise.

Prepare to be glorified on Sunday morning, March 31st at 11:00 CEST!
